The Roots at The Pavilion at Ravinia

The Pavilion stage here at Ravinia (just outside of Chicago!) is so excited to have The Roots take the stage this Summer for a one night, once in a lifetime show! Join us on Friday June 27th right here for the hip hop party of the season. 

The Roots are a hip hop and conscious rap group from Philly that has been a consistent and enduring act of the genre since they popped on the scene four decades ago. Formed by Black Thought and Questlove at the Philadelphia High School for Performing Arts, they were originally named The Square Roots before deciding to drop it from their official title. Though they had a tough time breaking through back home, after a brief stunt in London they were able to release their first project Organix and start the development of their cult following overseas. They toured heavily while in Europe as well - and the rest is history.

The group has seen many members come and go (they currently have eleven on their roster by our count) and even more stages since their American debut in 1994. Their album Do You Want More?!!!??! saw the band hit bigger stages and gain more fans on tour with shows like Chicago’s Lollapalooza and Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival, and the group finally broke into the mainstream with their third album, Illadelph Hills. By the time their fourth record, Things Fall Apart, had come out - the group was a certified name stay. Peaking on the Billboard charts, going platinum for the album, and winning big at the Grammys for their duet with Erykah Badu, You Got Me. 

The group has also toured extensively as well. They have collaborated and shared space with every big name in the game - including The Black Eyed Peas, Nas, Gwen Stefani, Common, Big Daddy Kane, and Jay Z - to name a few. They are the darlings of the 90s hip hop scene, and any shows they grace us with in their busy schedule are a treat and eye spectacle. You never know who’s going to come out when they take the stage - and that’s why seeing them live first hand is so important!
