The world-renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra has been blessing ears, souls, and hearts with the beauty of all genres of live music for over 130 years, and has gained the reputation as one of the greatest orchestras in the world. The ensemble of incredibly talented musicians perform in more than 150 concerts around the globe every year and can often be heard on best-selling recordings.

“The definition of virtuosity”.

When thinking about the works of composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff, the words of Observer UK come to mind. Apart from the fact that he is rated as one of the finest pianists of his day and the last great representative of Romanticism in music, the composer is known, and feared by some, for his great emotional depth, technical complexities, and evocative themes.

‘Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18’ is no different. From the storm of highly emotive themes caught in a whirlpool of interconnectivity between piano and orchestra in the first movement and the deep well of emotion and sentimentality weaved into the memorable melodies of the second movement, to one of the grandest climaxes in classical repertoire in the third movement, Piano Concerto No. 2 teases, sets ablaze, extinguishes, only to burn again.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra will also be treating audiences to a newly crafted suite based on Joan Tower’s ‘Concerto for Orchestra’. The work is a “dynamic showcase of orchestral virtuosity highlighting both the individual brilliance and the power of the ensemble”. The suite promises everything Joan Tower is known for: propulsive rhythms, rich harmonies, and bold expression, to name but a few.

To add to an already wonderful evening with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, maestro Peter Oundjian will also lead a breathtaking performance of Johannes Brahms’ ‘Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68’ - a work on which the composer spent no less than 21 years. The richly orchestrated symphony, a masterclass in intellectual depth combined with emotional power, memorable melodies, and soaring energy, premiered in 1876 in Karlsruhe, Germany.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra will be coming home to the Pavilion at Ravinia this summer, bringing superb music to its popular stage. The venue can host up to 3,400 music lovers spread across five covered reserved seating areas, as well as a general admission lawn area. Apart from its stunning setting and architecture, the venue also has top-tier acoustics, impeccable sight-lines, great amenities, and promises a fantastic night to any music lover!

Go on, get your tickets, and let live music be the perfect ending to summer!
