Rita Finds Home first premiered in 2022 and was a collaboration between Joffrey Ballet and Miami City Ballet. Rita Finds Home is the story of Rita, a young painter who wants to leave her home island and chase her dreams of living in the big city as an artist. The dancers show her struggles to adapt to a different home after a hurricane unexpectedly storms through her home island, and her journey to re-defining what home means. Chavarri’s watercolours accompany the ballet, with props like dancing butterflies and beautiful transforming costumes that create an immersive set and story. Working closely with dancers-on-the-rise, the Joffrey creative team focused on making the production suitable for all ages and to explore the importance of belonging and resilience.
