Jazz In June: Battle of the Big Bands sees the talented Adonis Rose and his New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, and Captain Black Big Band face off at The Pavilion at Ravinia, Illinois. Hosted by Kurt Elling and Rufus Reid, this top jazz event is taking place in Highland Park on Sunday 16th June 2024. Spearheaded by talented trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, New Orleans Jazz Orchestra is an incredible ensemble that boasts easy-rolling rhythms and forthright brass playing. Meanwhile, Orrin Evans’ Captain Black Big Band is a Grammy nominated group that has cultivated a vigorous sound that is raw, raucous, and unpredictable. Joining these jazz heavyweights are young professional musicians from this year’s RSMI Jazz Program and amazing Chicago Public High School musicians of the Ravinia Jazz Scholars. Hosted by Kurt Elling and Rufus Reid, Jazz In June: Battle of the Big Bands features the incredibly talented Adonis Rose and his New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. Orrin Evans will also be taking to the stage leading the Captain Black Big Band. Kurt Elling will lend his vocals as a Ravinia Jazz Advisor, meanwhile Rufus Reid wears the hat of standard-setting bassist.
The two groups - New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and Captain Black Big Band - face off in Ravinia’s Pavilion. Each Grammy Award-winning group comes from a community important to Black music, New Orleans and Philadelphia. This killer lineup will provide a night of unmatched jazz music. The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra is on a mission to use jazz as a catalyst for positive and permanent change in the community, leading the city’s acclaimed Jazz Market. Spearheaded by talented trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, this group was created to reinvigorate the musical roots in New Orleans following hurricane Katrina. You can expect easy-rolling rhythms and forthright brass playing from this incredible ensemble. Meanwhile, Orrin Evans’ Captain Black Big Band switches simultaneously between big band and small ensemble playing. This Grammy nominated group has become one of the biggest names in jazz. Over the years, they’ve cultivated a vigorous sound that is raw, raucous, and unpredictable.
Before these jazz heavyweights ignite the stage, young professional musicians from this year’s RSMI Jazz Program perform a set in the Pavilion. This introductory performance comes in celebration of the ensemble’s annual Jazz Grandstand concert of all original works.
